In part: "I have the pleasure to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of June 29 informing me that the Council of the British Association for the advancement of Sciences has elected me a corresponding member of the Association and I would thank you to communicate to the Council my thanks for this honor, with the observance that I take a lively interest in the success of their very important and useful association...I shall be gratified in receiving the volumes of the printed reports of the proceedings...." The American mathematician and astronomer expanded and published J.H. Moore's standard work as The New American Practical Navigator in 1802. At the time of this letter, Bowditch was in the midst of translating, with commentaries, French mathematician and astronomer Pierre-Simon de Laplace's Celestial Mechanics. He died in 1838 after he had finished translating the first four volumes. SIR WILLIAM VENABLES VERNON HARCOURT (1789-1871), an English chemist and clergyman was one of the founders of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. The organization was open to all who were interested in science at a time when the Royal Society was becoming more restrictive and professional in its membership.
